“It’s getting rather monotonous to say that Jon Hiseman played the greatest drum solo of his career at Colosseum’s last gig. But the music Jon played on drums at the Lyceum, London on Sunday, was breathtaking.

It may be unfair to single out the drum solo from a long concert of brilliant band playing, but Jon’s performance was unique. From the construction point of view it was fairly orthodox, leaping off from a heavy marching rhythm and building to various climatic surges on the snare, tom toms, cymbals and bass drums in turn.

But the scope, breadth of imagination, relentless drive and Jon’s evolution of complex patterns combined to produce one of the most mesmeric, gripping solos I can recall, on a par with Louie Bellson’s great solo for BBC2 in 1966.”
