RADIO 3 JAZZ JAMS
One of the best jazz record programmes on air is Geoffrey Smith’s ‘Jazz’ on BBC Radio 3. Tune in at midnight on Saturdays to be treated to a succession of profiles of some of the finest performers from the golden age of swing to bop. Most recent was a show devoted to the recordings made by Billie Holiday and Lester Young in the 1930s, when they formed a perfectly matched dream team. Geoffrey explained the synergy between Prez and Lady Day, (as the tenor saxophonist and singer called each other) with the sharply presented mix for analysis and information that makes his show such a pleasure to hear. Will Gene Krupa be his next subject? Or did we miss that one! By the way, we should explain, ‘Prez’ was short for ‘President’ following a long line of jazz Dukes, Counts and Earls.
