When Peter Dawn published his definitive biography of Phil Seamen, hailed as Britain’s greatest jazz drummer in 2022 his book was given glowing reviews around the world. Fans from America to Australia and from France to the far flung islands of Scotland ordered copies and wrote to the author to sing its praises.
Now it will be celebrated at home with a special presentation ‘Phil Seamen Percussion Genius’ to be held at the Jazz Centre UK on June 24th 2023. The centre based at the Beecroft Art Gallery, Southend on Sea will host talks and demonstrations by Peter Dawn, Chris Welch and drummer Rod Brown, sharing memories and telling stories about Phil Seamen’s life and music.
Rare film footage of Phil in action, including a legendary drum battle with Ginger Baker, will be shown and Rod Brown, one of Phil’s last pupils will demonstrate drum exercises and examples of Seamen’s special technique.
